History of Shea Butter Oil
Organic Shea Butter Oil, also known as Shea Nut Oil, is fractionated Shea Butter, meaning it is a by-product of making Shea Butter. Africans have used the Shea Tree to produce Shea Butter for thousands of years. Shea butter is made from the nuts of the Shea Tree, native to central Africa. It’s been used as a moisturizer and to help with a host of skin conditions from insect bites to burns to dry, itchy skin. Egyptian queen Cleopatra was fond of Shea Butter, and in fact she required that clay jars full of Shea Butter accompany her everywhere she went as it was her daily moisturizer. The wonderful healing, moisturizing and emollient qualities of Shea Butter then spread through Europe and beyond and it’s now a staple in modern beauty products.
When Shea Butter is heated at low temperatures parts of the butter melt off while other parts remain and become the shea “butter.” The Shea butter Oil that melts off has a slightly different chemical make-up so that it is a thick, creamy liquid at room temperature.
